JRE HPTuners RTD Phone-Based Remote Tuning Instructions for GM Vehicles

JANNETTY RACING GENERAL MOTORS (GM) CUSTOM TUNING INSTRUCTIONS USING HPTUNERS RTD DEVICES
 
Thank you for purchasing JRE Custom Tuning.
 
Your Custom Tuning purchase includes a MAXIMUM of 10 Revisions. Often, too much of our time is spent diagnosing installation issues, so we find it necessary to cap our time off somewhere fair for both parties.
 
If additional time or revisions are needed, custom pricing will be discussed with Ted before proceeding.
 
PLEASE NOTE: ANY part changes during the Tuning Session require either an upcharge or a new tuning session. Pricing increase will vary based on what was modified (as well as if it changes the Stage of your tune).
 
BEFORE STARTING
-Please visit the HPTuners website to ensure that you have the correct amount of HPTuners Credits Purchased for your Vehicle - Supported Vehicles List – HP Tuners
 
-You need a Wideband OBD2 Kit in order to perform the Datalog Section of the Tuning Process. We have 2 solutions available from our website, by AEM or Ballenger - Tuning & Remote Tuning Packages – JRE Performance Parts (jannettyracing.com)
 
-An iPhone (iOS) or Android Device capable of downloading and running the HPTuners TDN (Tune Delivery Network) App from the App Store/Play Store, as well as Bluetooth and WiFi/LTE Capability
 
SETUP AND CALIBRATION READOUT
 
Whether you already had your own HPTuners RTD Device, or you purchased one from us, the first step is to ensure you have the TDN App downloaded to your phone/device.
Go to your device's respective App Store or Play Store, and search for "HPTuners TDN". T
 
 
If you have not done so already, create an account with HPTuners and register your RTD Device with your account.
 
After completing the installation of the VCM Suite BETA and RTD Flasher software and registering your device, you will need to connect your device to your laptop and resend it with HPTuners’ Servers. This step is mandatory for properly reading, and later on, flashing, your vehicle.
 
Open the “RTD Flasher” software, accept the startup pop-up. On the top Hot-Bar, hover over “Help”, and click “Resync Interface”. This should add any pending credits to your RTD and ensure it is connected to your laptop correctly.
 
Before performing any actions using the VCM Suite software, it is strongly recommended to have a 10 Amp Battery charger hooked up to your car’s charging lugs under the hood.
  • Make sure any electronic accessories are disconnected in order to avoid any unnecessary power draw or communication issues
  • Make sure the car has not been disassembled in any manner (physically or electrically)
  • Make sure you have a good internet connection on your laptop.
 
Connect your RTD device to the vehicle using the OBD2 Port under the dashboard. Connect the RTD device to your laptop using the included USB Cable to an available port. Turn the vehicle’s key to the “Run” position (On GM Push-To-Start Models, Please PRESS AND HOLD your start button for 8 seconds without touching the clutch/brake pedal(s).)
 
Open the RTD Flasher software (if not already open), and select “Read Vehicle.” This will appear as a small Computer Chip Icon with a Green Arrow next to it. A dialog window will open up with two buttons, “Gather Info” and “Read.” Select “Gather Info” so you can see which modules you are reading.
 
Manual Transmission vehicles will have an ECM, sometimes an FSCM, and sometimes a CCM3. DO NOT READ THE CCM3, this will waste 1 Credit when you go to flash the vehicle.
 
AutomaticTransmission vehicles will have an ECM and TCM, sometimes an FSCM, and sometimes a CCM3. DO NOT READ THE CCM3, this will waste 1 Credit when you go to flash the vehicle.
 
Speaking of HPTuners Credits, most vehicles 2016-down will require 2 credits for the ECM and TCM, and otherwise 1 Credit for the FSCM.
2017 and Up vehicles will take 4 Credits for the ECM, and 1 Credit for the FSCM (If supported).
2017+ Automatic Transmission vehicles will require you to unlock your TCM for Unlocking before it can be either read out or edited.

Make sure to follow any on-screen instructions during the read-out process. Do not leave the vehicle unattended or the process can time-out or be delayed.
 
After the appropriate file have been read out by the RTD Flasher software, save the file(s) to a location the computer you have access to (i.e. your desktop, your downloads, or the HPTuners default folder.) An example would be on your desktop saved as “YOUR NAME 2010 CAMARO SS.rtd”.
 
BEGINNING THE TUNING PROCESS
 
The steps in this portion of the instructions are CRUCIAL to making sure that the process goes smooth on both your end and mine. READ CAREFULLY.
 
  1. Create an email with the Subject “Tune Request” to tedj@jannettyracing.com
    • All the information you are about to send over must be TYPED OUT. DO NOT SEND ANY INFORMATION OTHER THAN YOUR TUNE FILE IN THE ATTACHMENTS.
  2. In the body-text of the email please include:
    • Full name (First and Last)
    • Address
    • Phone Number(s)
    • Year, Make, Model, and Transmission type of your vehicle
    • Full List of Modifications (Brand and Part Numbers required.)
    • What fuel you will be burning (i.e. Premium Gasoline, Race Fuel, E85, etc)
    • Proof of Purchase in the form of a JRE Invoice/Order Number
      • If you haven’t paid for your tune yet, please let me know so that I can bill you VIA Paypal or otherwise
 
We HEAVILY PREFER to have your STOCK tune file, but if that is not accessible, your current tune file should suffice. Attach this before sending the email.
 
FLASHING, REVISIONS, AND DATALOGGING
 
As long as the above steps have been followed properly, you should receive an email response from me containing a NEW TUNE FILE, as well as a Channel List and Channel Layout to be used for our datalogging. Save all 3 of these files to their respective locations;
  • My Documents\HP Tuners\Logs and Tunes (for Tune Files)
  • My Documents\HP Tuners\VCM Scanner\Channel Configs (For Channel Configs)
  • My Documents\HP Tuners\VCM Scanner\Layouts (For Channel Layouts)
 
With your files saved properly, open the RTD Flasher software.

In the RTD Flasher software, select “Write Vehicle.” This will appear as a small Computer Chip Icon with a Red Arrow next to it. A dialog window will appear and you will have the option to “Write Calibration”, “Write Entire”, or “Do Not Write” in each of the modules. The Default setting for each of these modules is “Write Calibration. Make sure this is selected unless I instruct you to choose otherwise.
 
Make sure to follow any on-screen instructions during the flashing process. Do not leave the vehicle unattended or the process can time-out or be delayed.
 
After the flashing process is done, you will be prompted to cycle the key. Turn the ignition off for 10 seconds, then back on for 10 seconds, and off again for another 10 seconds. You can now start the vehicle.
 
After confirming that you have successfully flashed and started the vehicle, open your VCM Scanner software. This will begin the datalogging portion of the tuning.
 
In the VCM Scanner software, look to the upper left section of your channel list (left side of your screen). Here, you will have the option to open a saved Channel List. Open the Channel List that I sent you in our email correspondence. Similarly, in the top left of the Layout screen (the part with a column of graphs), open the saved Layout that I sent you in our email correspondence.
 
Before datalogging, you will need to add the appropriate channel for your Wideband O2 Sensor. This video linked here is a great tutorial. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ozJz-pNFCuo&t=28s
 
After adding your Wideband to the Channel List, save your new Channel list using the Save Icon above the list.
 
After selecting your Channel List and Layout, get in the car and enter the car into “Run” mode with the Engine OFF. Plug your RTD device into the vehicle’s OBD2 port, connect it to your laptop using the USB cable, and select the “Connect to Vehicle” button in the VCM Scanner software. This will appear as a small Car Icon in the top toolbar towards the left.
 
After connecting the vehicle, open the Vehicle Functions menu. This will appear as a green Power Button icon on the top toolbar. Go to the “Fuel” tab in this window and reset ALL ADAPTIVES. This can include things like “Long Term Fuel Trims”. Some cars do not have this options, so just follow the prompts.
 
Start the car, warm it up to operating temperature, and prepare to drive the car in the EXACT manner I describe in my email (Light Throttle, Medium Throttle, Full Throttle, etc.).
  • Before logging, make sure the Air Condition and/or Defroster are OFF - Otherwise there will be torque reduction requests which will ruin the datalog.
  • Before logging; With the car Idling, put your foot down on the brake pedal and hold the ESC/Traction Control Button down for 8 seconds to disable the traction/stability control. Otherwise, this will also interfere with datalogging.
  • WARM THE CAR UP FULLY TO OPERATING TEMPERATURE BEFORE DATALOGGING.
 
 
First Datalog - Light Throttle Logs. Drive the car for about 20 minutes, cycling up and down in the RPM scale from Idle through 5000 RPM as many times as you can. Use as little throttle as necessary in order to achieve a SMOOTH RPM SWEEP.
 
Please do ALL OF THIS IN ONE DATALOG. Do not send me multiple datalogs unless I specifically ask you to do so.
 
Manual Transmission Cars; You can do this in lower gears and stay within the speed limits, your call.
 
Automatic Transmission Cars; Use Paddle/Manual Shift Mode, use the lower gears to move from Idle to 5000 RPM.
 
Boosted Cars; DO NOT GO INTO BOOST UNLESS I GIVE YOU THE OKAY TO DO SO.
 
After you are done datalogging, stop the car. Save your Datalog file as “(Your Name) Log 1.hpl” etc.
Email me the log file(s) along with the following information in the body of the email;
    • Full name (First and Last)
    • Address
    • Phone Number(s)
    • Year, Make, Model, and Transmission type of your vehicle
    • Full List of Modifications (Brand and Part Numbers required.)
    • What fuel you are burning (i.e. Premium Gasoline, Race Fuel, E85, etc)
I Need this information with every log. Please include any comments you think may be useful/helpful to the tuning process.
 
Please do not assume that I know you by your forum screen name, what car you drive, or what mods you have. I deal with anywhere between 50-100 people per day, so I must have all of your information right in front of me in ONE email so that I can properly Write or Refine your tune.
 
Please include the complete email chain when you follow up.

WOT (Wide Open Throttle) Logging - When I ask you for a WOT log, you will typically select a gear (i.e. 3rd Gear in a Manual, or 4th Gear in an Auto), and from a 1500 RPM roll you would go WOT to 4500 RPM for the first log, and then I will instruct you further after each revision.
 
JRE TUNE UPDATE PROGRAM
 
Any time you request a tune update from me due to a change in modification combination, you will need to provide the following information to me so that I can update your tune;
    • Full name (First and Last)
    • Address
    • Phone Number(s)
    • Year, Make, Model, and Transmission type of your vehicle
    • Full List of PREVIOUS Modifications (Brand and Part Numbers required.)
    • Full List of CURRENT Modifications (Brand and Part Numbers required.)
    • What fuel you are burning (i.e. Premium Gasoline, Race Fuel, E85, etc)
I do not need your Stock/Previous tune file as I will have it in my database, stored.
 
I DO need to know if you purchased your new parts from JRE to qualify for the discounted tune update, in the form of a Proof of Purchase (JRE Invoice/Order Number is perfect).
